How the calculator works
A shulker box holds 27 item stacks. For one item, divide the item count by its actual maximum stack size and round up to get occupied slots; divide those slots by 27 and round up again for boxes. For example, 10,000 items that stack to 64 use 157 slots and 6 shulker boxes. The last stack holds 16 items. Minecraft’s shulker box guide confirms the 27-stack capacity and says shulker boxes cannot contain shulker boxes.
In a mixed list, each item name is treated as a separate type. Each type’s quantity is rounded up to its own stack count before summing slots. The “mix” option lets different item types occupy slots in the same box. The “keep separate” option rounds each item type up to complete boxes first. Neither option combines unlike items inside a slot or nests shulker boxes.
Pick the correct stack size
64, 16, and 1 are convenient starting points, not an item catalog. Some items have other limits; modified worlds may change them. Check the specific item and your game version, then use the custom field if needed. This is a slot-and-count planner, not a simulator of bundles, hoppers, automatic sorters, or special container behavior.
Frequently asked questions
How many items fit in one shulker box?
For one item stacking to 64, 27 × 64 = 1,728 items. For a stack size of 16, the capacity is 432 items. For non-stackable items, it is 27. A mixed box’s item count depends on what occupies its 27 slots.
Why does 65 items at stack size 64 use two slots?
One slot holds 64 and a second holds the remaining item. An incomplete stack still takes a whole slot.
Can I put shulker boxes inside other shulker boxes?
No. The optional carrier check counts a filled shulker box as one slot in another storage space such as an ender chest or free player inventory, not inside another shulker box.
Does the mixed option guarantee a real sorter layout?
No. It is the minimum slot count if you can mix item types across boxes. If you want boxes dedicated to individual items, choose “keep each item type in its own boxes.”
