Overworld to Nether coordinate formula
Divide Overworld X and Z by 8 to find the corresponding Nether location. Going the other way, multiply Nether X and Z by 8. Do not scale Y: it represents height in its own dimension. Minecraft’s official coordinate guide explains that X runs east/west, Z runs south/north, and Y is altitude; the Minecraft Wiki portal tutorial documents the 8:1 horizontal conversion.
For example, Overworld (1000, 64, −500) converts exactly to Nether (125, 64, −62.5). Since a portal must occupy blocks, the selected rounding rule suggests a nearby whole Z coordinate. The round-trip line shows which Overworld X/Z that chosen block represents and makes the rounding offset visible.
Why aligned coordinates may still link differently
Coordinate conversion gives the target point, not a guaranteed one-to-one portal assignment. The game can find another eligible portal near that target, and portal search or creation behavior can differ by edition and release. Vertical separation and competing portals matter even though Y is not multiplied or divided. The pair checker therefore reports offsets without a “will link” verdict. Test both directions in the actual world before relying on a route.
Frequently asked questions
Do I divide all three coordinates by 8?
No. Divide only X and Z when going from the Overworld to the Nether. Keep Y as a same-number starting reference, then choose a safe, buildable height in the destination.
How should I round negative coordinates?
Nearest minimizes coordinate error, but a half-block tie needs a convention; this tool rounds halves away from zero. Floor always moves toward negative infinity, ceiling toward positive infinity, and toward-zero drops the decimal. The exact result remains visible so you can choose deliberately.
Does one Nether block always save eight blocks of walking?
The coordinate scale is 1:8 horizontally. The route calculator compares straight-line horizontal endpoints; terrain, safe paths, portal approach distance, and vertical travel can change the real trip.
Does a zero X/Z offset guarantee the portals link?
No. It means the horizontal coordinates are mathematically aligned. Nearby portals, Y separation, obstruction, edition, and game version can still affect portal selection and creation.
