Leather Belt Strap & Hole Layout

Turn a measured buckle and desired fit into the blank length, adjustment-hole positions, mirrored fastener marks, and true-size SVG end templates—without relying on a generic jeans-size allowance.

1. Fit and strap

Switching converts every entered length.
From the buckle prong contact point to the intended center fit hole.
From leather fold line to the same prong contact point.
Leather available behind the fold for fastening.
Guide from each long edge; enter 0 for none.

2. Wear holes and tip

Must be odd so the intended fit is the center hole.

3. Buckle hardware

One to six distances. Each creates a mirrored pair across the fold.
Guide only; enter 0 to omit it.

Measure a buckle instead of guessing its allowance

Finished belt size is the distance around the wearer from the point where the buckle prong bears on the buckle to the preferred hole. Buckle reach is the distance from the leather fold to that same contact point. Subtracting buckle reach leaves the required leather distance from the fold to the center hole. This keeps a long or short buckle from silently changing the fit.

If you measure an existing belt, keep it straight without stretching it and measure from the worn buckle contact point to the most-used hole. Do not substitute a trouser-label size unless you intentionally accept its uncertainty.

Use the two template types deliberately

The end-template SVG places a buckle-end strip and a tip-end strip on A4 or US Letter landscape at 1:1 scale. The tip strip includes a labelled datum showing its distance from the buckle-end cut, so it can be aligned after the long distance is measured directly on the strap. The full-size SVG contains the complete belt in one physically sized canvas for a plotter, vector editor, laser workflow, or custom tiling.

A browser or printer can rescale an SVG despite its physical dimensions. Print at Actual size / 100%, turn off “Fit to page,” and measure the 100 mm or 4 inch calibration line before trusting any mark.

What the buckle marks mean

The slot is centered on the fold line. Each entered fastener offset creates one mark on the fold-back and a mirrored mark on the main strap, so those locations coincide geometrically after a sharp fold. Real leather has thickness and a bend radius, while snaps, Chicago screws, rivets, billets, and stitched buckle ends need different clearances. Treat the drawing as a measured layout worksheet, not a hardware specification.

Leathercraft boundary

Make a paper and scrap-leather test first. Verify buckle orientation, prong travel, slot clearance, keeper thickness, fold radius, fastener grip length, edge distance, leather stretch, lining, stitching, tip shape, and the actual wearer measurement. The tool does not choose leather weight, approve structural or safety-critical straps, add skiving allowances, or compensate for tooling and burnishing.

Frequently asked questions

Why must the number of adjustment holes be odd?

The entered finished size is anchored to one center fit hole. An odd count places the same number of shorter and longer settings on either side and prevents an ambiguous “center” between two holes.

Why is the blank longer than the finished belt size?

The blank includes leather behind the buckle fold, subtracts the part of fit supplied by the buckle itself, and adds adjustment holes plus the tail beyond the last hole. Those pieces are all visible in the schedule.

Can I use the SVG with a laser cutter?

It is a dimensioned vector reference, but it is not machine-ready process code. Inspect stroke assignments, kerf, material behavior, ventilation, fire risk, and the machine workflow before using it for cutting or marking.

Does the tip template include the full belt?

No. The page-sized end template carries only the marking zones. Use its labelled datum to place the tip strip on the measured blank, or download the full-size SVG when you need one continuous drawing.
